About Eldon Farm

Eldon Farm was aquired by the business relatively recently and is on the edge of Thetford Forest, the land is typical of the Breckland series and is "blowaway sand". Crops grown must either be very drought resistant or receive adequate irrigation.

The farm shop is situated next to the MiscanthusPure packaging and drying plant. Miscanthus is grown on the land around the buildings so you can actually see the MiscanthusPure horse bedding being grown although the crop growth varies depending on the time of the year it reaches over 3 metres tall in late summer and is very impressive to see.

Eldon Farm is farmed as part of the Breckland ESA scheme, this DEFRA scheme is a 10 year agreement designed to improve conservation within the Brecklands. Our agronomist instigated things by organising a farm audit by Suffolk FWAG and their advice formed the basis of our ESA scheme application.

Recent conservation work here includes:

  • The use of  6 metre wide uncropped conservation areas around all field margins next to watercourses
  • Pond creation
  • Hedge planting.
  • Arable reversion to grassland helping to protect the neighbouring wet woodlands
  • Reduced cultivations and overwintering stubbles.
  • A FWAG audit and RSPB survey.
  • An otter holt was built in 2002

We would highly recommend a FWAG audit to any farmers considering entering any conservation schemes or just wanting advice on biodiversity improvement.
